Hiya! Husband and I got food poisoning last night from a restaurant, and we are still not feeling awesome, so I'm really sad that I won't be able to make it!!!! Here are some of my questions and reflections:
Saxo Grammaticus also described in History of the Danes that some of the women who fought appeared to have "unsexed themselves," which might further confirm that these maidens transformed themselves to do their jobs.
On page 156, I probably missed it, but what does "HH" stand for??
Bottom paragraph of 162--I'm getting a bit confused with what is being identified as "gender" vs what someone's occupation is. To my understanding, gender is more psychological in nature (what someone identifies as), but this author is continually drawing ties between gender and someone's occupation/gender ROLE. Brynhild "can only recall the time before her marriage when she was "a bold woman in a byrnie"". Okay, so she does identify herself as a woman. It further states in the paragraph that "even as she embroiders, she rules over lands and men all lost to her after marriage - a multitasking that demonstrates her membership in the third gender." Does it actually describe a 3rd gender on a psychological basis though? Or is it just describing that she's a badass in doing what she does as part of her occupation? One could say she's multitasking across gender "roles", and I would certainly agree with that. But that alone doesn't automatically imply to me that she's psychologically a part of a "3rd gender".
